Virgin America: Pet Policy

What methods of transport does Virgin America provide for my pet?

Cats and dogs may travel in the main cabin of the aircraft. Pets checked as baggage are not accepted.

Does my pet qualify for travel in the passenger cabin?

Each animal should be carried in its own kennel (provided by the passenger). Virgin America allows one pet carrier for each purchased seat. Puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old and weaned. The total weight of the animals and kennel cannot be above 20 lbs/9 kg. The passenger wishing to carry on a cabin pet must present a veterinary certificate dated within 30 days prior to departure that indicates that the shots are current and that the date of birth is listed and is verified to be greater than 8 weeks of age.

What are the kennel requirements?

In addition to the size and weight maximums, the USDA and Virgin America require that kennels meet the following requirements:

  • Must be specifically made for animal carriage and not exceed 18 in x 15 in x 8 in/ 45 cm x 38 cm x 20 cm.
  • Be leak-proof and escape-proof.
  • Be properly ventilated, but not allow any part of the animal from protruding outside of the container.
  • Provide enough room for the animal to stand and turn around.
  • Contain absorbent material or litter.

What are the fees associated with pet transport?

Virgin America adds a $100 fee to the price of your reservation for the transportation of each pet per segment.

What health documentation is required?

You must present a veterinary certificate dated within 30 days prior to departure that indicates that the shots are current and that the date of birth is listed and is verified to be greater than 8 weeks of age. When booking your reservation, you will be advised to contact your veterinarian to determine additional government requirements for pets at their final destination.
