Norwegian Air UK: Pet Policy

What methods of transport does Norwegian Air UK (DI) provide for my pet?

  • Dogs and cats can travel in the cargo hold on the following flights:
    • Flights to/from Svalbard (dogs only)
    • Flights within Schengen and/or EU (UK and Ireland excluded)
    • Domestic flights within Argentina
    • Note: up to two cats or two dogs can travel in the same crate if they’re well acquainted. They must be of a similar size (maximum weight: 14 kg per animal). A dog and cat are not permitted to travel in the same crate.
    • For connecting flights- only in Norway: Dogs and cats can travel in the cargo hold on connecting flights within Norway (excluding to/from Svalbard) via Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen Flesland and Trondheim Vaernes. **Your transfer time between flights must be longer than 1 hour and shorter than 2 hours.
  • Small cats or dogs can travel in the cabin on domestic flights within Argentina and on flights within Schengen and/or EU (excluding UK and Ireland). Norwegian Air UK (DI) accepts up to two pets in the cabin per flight (up to three small puppies or kittens travelling in the same container may be booked as one animal).

Does my pet qualify for travel in the passenger cabin?

  • Small cats or dogs can travel in the cabin on domestic flights within argentina and on flights within Schengen and/or EU (excluding UK and Ireland).
  • Your pet, including the contain your pet(s) are in must not exceed 8 kg in total gross weight.

Does my pet qualify to be shipped as cargo?

Cats and dogs can travel in cargo hold on flights to/from Svalbard (dogs only), flights within Schengen and/or EU (UK and Ireland excluded) and domestic flights within Argentina/ The maximum weight per animal is 14 kg. If you are on a connecting flight in Norway (excluding to/from Svalbard), cats and dogs can travel in the cargo hold via Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen Flesland and Trondheim Vaernes, but your transfer time between flights must be longer than 1 hour and shorter than 2 hours. 

What are the fees associated with pet transport?

  • Fee for animal in the cargo hold: 70-90 EUR (online) 85-100 EUR (airport), per animal, each way.
  • Fee for animal in the cabin: 45-60 GBP (online) 55-75 GBP (airport), per animal, each way.

What are the kennel requirements?

In the cargo hold:

  • Your pet must be able to stand up, turn round and lay in a natural position when it’s in its container.
  • The container must be no bigger than 125x81x86cm (LxWxH).
  • It must be clearly marked with your name and mobile phone number.
  • It must be clean, in good condition, and be made of a solid material that is fully waterproof. However, weld mesh containers are not allowed.
  • You must remove or fasten any wheels.
  • You must secure the kennel door with zip ties/cable ties.
  • It must be adequately ventilated on three sides.

In the cabin:

  • Norwegian Air UK (DI)recommends using a ‘Sherpa Bag’ made of flexible materials when travelling with a pet in the cabin (available at most pet stores). Norwegian Air UK (DI) also accepts other carries, but they must always meet the following requirements:
    • The container must not be bigger than 43x31x20 cm, or, if soft, should compress down to fit these dimensions.
    • The container and pet(s) must not exceed 8 kg in total gross weight.

What health documentation is required?

Norwegian Air UK (DI) requires that before you fly, you make sure that your cat or dog has all the necessary paperwork for air travel. This includes vaccination documents. On international flights, Norwegian Air UK (DI) requires this certificate to be in English.

Are there any other restrictions?

Norwegian Air UK (DI) requires that you have completed check-in at least one hour before departure if you’re travelling with your pet.

If you’d like to bring your dog to or from Svalbard you need to apply for a permit from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Important information regarding Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs and cats:

  • Several Veterinary Associations around the world informs that the carriage by air of brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds of dogs and cats involves an increased risk of breathing problems and overheating due to the stress of flying. If your pet is a brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breed and you wish to travel with Norwegian Air UK (DI), you will be asked to sign a release form at check-in acknowledging the risks associated with air travel for your pet. If you’re uncertain if your pet is a brachycephalic breed, please contact your vet for advice. 

Travelling with a Service Dog:

Service dogs and service dogs in training can travel on most of the Norwegian Air UK (DI) flights in the cabin at no extra charge.

It’s easy to book a place for your service dog online or through Norwegian’s Contact Centre, or add a request to an existing booking. Norwegian Air UK (DI) recommends that you book at least 48 hours before departure to make sure Norwegian Air UK (DI) has enough space.

Different conditions will apply depending on the type of service the animal provides, and where you are travelling.

Travelling with an Assistance Dog:

An assistance dog is one which has been specifically trained a to assist a person with a disability. Assistance dogs may include guide dogs, hearing dogs, and service dogs that are trained to help people who use wheelchairs, have autism, need help balancing or with various other conditions, such as seizures, low blood sugar or a mental health impairment. 

  • Assistance dogs are permitted in the cabin on all flights excluding connecting flights via the UK
  • Assistance dogs are permitted in the cargo hold on direct flights within Schengen and to/from Svalbard
  • Bookings can be made online for all direct flights excl. flights to/from UK, U.S., Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Thailand and Svalbard
  • Bookings for flights to/from UK, U.S., Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Thailand, Svalbard and connecting flights must be made via our Contact Centre

 

Travelling with a Police and Search and Rescue Dog(s):

Police and search and rescue dogs are specifically trained to assist law enforcement personnel or other organizations responsible for search and rescue activity.

  • Police and search and rescue dogs are permitted in the cabin on all flights within Schengen
  • Police and search and rescue dogs are permitted in the cargo hold on direct flights only within Schengen and to/from Svalbard
  • Bookings can be made online for all direct flights excl. to/from Svalbard
  • Bookings for flights to/from Svalbard and connecting flights must be made via our Contact Centre

 

Travelling with an Emotional Support Dog(s):

An emotional support dog provides support to a person with a mental or emotional disability. Emotional support dogs are not required to have specific training, but the person travelling with the dog must bring documentation they require this support. 

As a foreign carrier operating flights to/from the US, in circumstances where we are required by law to transport emotional support animals, we are only required to accept dogs as emotional support animals.

  • Emotional support dogs are only permitted in the cabin on direct flights to and from the U.S (excl. flights to the UK). To be accepted for travel on flights to the UK, the dog must receive specific training and certification from an accredited body for assistance dogs worldwide.
  • Bookings must be made via our Contact Centre.
  • The emotional support dog must accompany a passenger requiring this assistance, and current documentation (no older than one year from the date of passenger's scheduled initial flight) supporting the need for this assistance must be presented at check-in and accompany the animal when travelling.
  • The documentation must be on the letterhead of a licensed mental health professional (e.g. psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, including a medical doctor specifically treating the passenger's mental or emotional disability) and must state the following:
    • The passenger has a mental or emotional disability recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—Fourth Edition (DSM IV).
    • The passenger needs the emotional support or psychiatric service animal as an accommodation for air travel and/or for activity at the passenger's destination.
    • The individual providing the assessment is a licensed mental health professional, and the passenger is under his or her professional care.
    • The date and type of the mental health professional's license and the state or other jurisdiction in which it was issue
