Overview

This Boeing 717 (717) seats 110 passengers and is primarily used on Domestic routes. This next-generation aircraft features 12 First Class recliner seats, 20 Delta Comfort+ seats, and 78 Economy seats.

First Class has been upgraded to the Delta standard, with the same recliner seats featured in their 757-300 fleet. Delta Comfort+ and Economy is outfitted with slim line seating that allows for additional knee clearance and power ports are available at all seats. Because this aircraft operates short-haul routes primarily, AVOD is not installed. However, Wi-Fi and wireless entertainment on demand is available.

Nice window seat unobstructed by the wing but the legroom is extremely tight on this plane in economy. It does have the sliding seats so that helps if the person in front of you reclines. But this plane feels very cramped compared to some of Delta's larger ones (which still aren't exactly spacious).

Even though it is an old aircraft the interior is not. Very comfortable with ample kneeroom, seat width and elbow room. Difficult for window seat passenger to get out during flight. Lack of seatback entertainment; must use own smart phone, tablet, or laptop. Will not work on Kindle. I did not bother using the entertainment, I had downloaded videos to my Kindle prior to leaving home.

The description of this seat says that it has a “limited recline”. This isnt true. It has zero recline. And the adjustable headrest adjusts, but doesnt stay put. It slumps back down. Prepare to sit fully erect the entire flight.

I am a very large traveler. I am a female at roughly 5'5, weighing about 315lbs. I relied heavily on this site to help me find a good seat, so I wanted to share my experience as well to help others. I sat in 12C, which was a Comfort+ seat. I will be honest, I was terrified because of my size. The seat was surprisingly comfortable. I felt like it was wide enough to hold me and I didn't even interfere with the person next to me. At the same time, however, my seatmate and I got lucky and our third seatmate did not show. Since that happened, my seatmate went ahead and moved to the window seat and we had the seat between us empty. I got LUCKY! While I don't feel I was an undue burden on my seatmate, I felt much more comfortable having the spare seat between us. Please see my other reviews for the smaller planes!

MCI to DTW short flight, seat is better than those on a A319 . I am 6' 250lbs and was able to get both feet under seat in front and my knees did not touch the seat in front. Two across seating great when traveling with a loved one.

21B doesn't have any additional legroom and the tray table is in the arm rest. The tray is barely big enough to fit a tablet so avoid if you plan to work or watch movies. You can stow under the seat in front of you.

This is a great Comfort+ seat with great legroom and plenty of space for your bag under the first class seats. At least in my seat, the tray table in the armrest did not extend away from your body, which didn't allow me to use it since I'm a bit on the bigger side. Luckily, it was a short hop between LAX-SFO so I didn't really need it, but something to keep in mind on longer flights.

This seat sucks! This was a last minute flight and I was assigned this seat at the gate. What I didn't realize is that there was no window! Hardly any recline either (if any). Although the engine noise didn't bother me, be aware that it is literally right next to you and it is very loud.

Not bad, not great overall. All of the first class rows have the seat leg support bars in the middle of the aisle seat foot room, so that under seat storage for the B and C seats is split. The part toward the aisle was too small for my laptop backpack, so I had to jam it in on the window side along with the window seat person's bag. It just doesn't seem like 1st class should have limited under seat storage. Also, passengers from other cabins used the first class bathroom so the assumption that I'd only be sharing with 11 other people and would rarely if ever have to wait was gone. I have a medical issue where this is important. Had I known this I would've just gone with Comfort+.

Overall, the seats were fine. Comfortable and roomy enough for me. There is a blower behind 3C and while noisy, did nothing to us. Delta really has nice seats in First Class on their 717's. They were enough to last the 3.5 hour flight from BOS-RSW. The flight attendants do tend to bump into 3C due to the aisle, but the seats are great. Row is perfectly situated for a nice view out the window

My son actually had this seat. There IS floor storage for this seat. I think that warning should be removed. There's barely any additionally leg room (maybe no extra) and the tray table is in the arm rest so it's a little tighter, but I think it's at least an average seat.

Average legroom, view is partially obstructed by the wing, but not too much. Engine noise was bearable, but I would never sit in the rear due to extremely loud tail-mounted engines (try the rear lavatories to get an impression).

I ended up at the last minute in an economy seat in the middle toward the back after weather rerouted me and changed my plans entirely, so I would not normally have chosen this seat or even this flight. That said, the plane was pretty comfortable for a short haul. There were ample power outlets which was much appreciated. Given that a route this short (ORD-DTW) would often be on a tiny regional jet, this was far more comfortable and offered wifi and streaming entertainment to passengers' devices. More storage and room than a regional jet and a quieter ride. Far more cushioning in the seats than the United flights I've taken lately. Not my favorite plane and I wouldn't want to be on it for a longhaul, but a nice alternative to many of the alternatives for such a flight.

Agree that the seat cushion provides very little "cushioning even for a 1.5 hour flight from DTW to RDU. Marginal legroom even in this FC seat. Disappointing especially based on the price and that Delta is getting most things right but seat width and pitch are as bad as it gets.

Seats 16 A and B have a very loud HVAC blower above the seat. This is one of the loudest air handlers I have ever heard on any airplane. My noise cancelling headphones were unable to block it out. I complained to the flight attendant, who was completely indifferent.

19A/B have plenty of leg room (exit row) but very narrow with the tray table in the center console and 19A has no arm rest (nor does 19F) at the window. No recline at all! Plane is very noisy. I really wish that Delta had not bought these planes from AirTran.

3 legs in 2 days on a 717. Seats were comfortable for my 5'10 frame. I actually look for flights with the 717 compared to the A-319. No Video wich is fine with me. I try to sit on the side with 2 seats, no middle seat. The bathrooms in coach are twice the width of the Airbus cans which are miserable. I didn't find the noise objectionable. The 717 rides softer than the Airbus which has a stiffer wing.

We got bumped off the morning flight to BTV. Lavratories aren't that bad unless you get an aisle seat on this row. Bring headphones, the engine noise is very loud. Legroom was ok for a 5-5. Deplaning was pretty quick.

If Delta offered seat 10C on an MD 90 for free -- or even if they offered a cash payment -- Id pass. Due to the dog-leg configuration, which refers to both how the seat juts out into the aisle, insuring passengers, attendants and carts will invariably collide with you, as well as the raised-leg canine salute this engineering nightmare deserves, avoid this seat at all costs. Calling this seat Comfort Plus and charging extra for it demonstrates Deltas keen sense of irony. If theyd focus on customer satisfaction rather than naked corporate greed, theyd remove this seat. In protest, Im canceling my Delta-branded credit card.

(I agree with all negative comments) I will never fly in this plane model again. Flight from MSP to NYC in "first class" was torture: The noise, which was considerable, I could have dealt with, but the seats were beyond uncomfortable -- rigid plastic upholstery, no cushioning, pre-formed to accommodate a non-lumbar friendly "crouching" posture (headrest and shoulder area tilted forward, deep recess at lower back area) with little recline. I was aching for hours after getting off!! If ever forced to take this plane again, I certainly wouldn't pay for first class, as there doesn't seem to be much difference between these and the "Comfort +" and Economy seats, outside of a tiny bit more seat width.

Horrible seat. Sitting there puts you literally inches from the engine and is extremely noisy, and there is no window at all. The seats don't recline at all. My mother and I flew in that row (she was in the "window" seat) and we had to move seats, as she got extremely claustrophobic.

Just flew from JFK to PBI in seat 13D Economy Comfort. I chose the extra legroom to accommodate my 18 lbs. Havanese traveling in a pet carrier, which was stowed under the seat in front. My dog and his carrier had ample height and enough to slide under the seat in front. I find the middle seat has more width than the aisle or window when traveling with my dog. Seat was extremely comfy too!

After flying for many hours on the cramped MD-90 (SMF to MSP), sitting in an aircraft with this much legroom was great. It's at least an inch or two more than the MD-90, and I was able to stretch my legs on multiple occasions. The seat reclined. It has a USB port and a power outlet, which was great considering their absence on my previous flight. In the end, greaf flight. Not sure what reg my bird was (the original had an engine issue, so they gave us a new aircraft), but it looked fairly new (with eyebrow windows); it was a short-ish flight of about two and a half hours from MSP to BOS.

I got used to flying regional jets on short haul routes I was pleased to find this aircraft on a relatively short hop from EWR to DTW. The seat was fairly comfortable and has an AC power and USB port! The cabin width is the same as the old DC-9 and MD-80 but felt a lot less cramped. If you have the choice between the 717 and an ERJ or CRJ I would choose the 717 every time.

Seat was completely average. Nothing great, nothing terrible. Definitely quieter up there than the back of the plane. Legroom was ok at best, seats were adequately padded, and recline was fine. For a 2.5 hour flight from JFK-FLL it was fine.

This seat was average. Padding very thin but headrest was nice. Three USB power outlets per row in coach. No IFE on my flight. It was a night flight and they gave us two snacks instead of one, plus the whole can of soda !!!, and came through with water later. Wider fliers won't fit well in the seats, and the belts are slightly shorter than the ones on Southwest. I'm 6 feet tall and my knees touched the seat in front of me. Seats and backs are so thin that I felt every move the kid behind me made, and when we took off I seriously worried that the seatback would come off and I'd crush the kid in 18E. Also - only row 19 and seats 21A and 21E have additional leg room. Don't let them put you in row 20, because they're not really exit rows in terms of seat pitch or leg room.

26A and 27A are perfect for those enthusiasts that like a good view of the engine and the wing. 27 has about 1/4 the window filled with the engine, where-as from 26 you can see straight into the blades. The sound is awesome on takeoff, definitely in my top 3 aircraft sounds! To everyone saying that the aircraft is loud, let me tell you, it is no louder than any other aircraft when your sitting next to the engine.

I fly row 1, either 1A or 1D, of the 717 and MD88 often. 1A doesn't both me on the hour long flights but wouldn't fly much longer than that. There's no cutout for your feet, but I never have an issue walking around somebody to get to the restroom even with legs stretched.

First Class seats on this aircraft have virtually no recline, and the last row (3) has no recline. The tray table comes from the arm rest and gives less clearance (for us big guys) than Comfort Class. Take Comfort Class instead and save money.

LOUD. The engine noise is unbearable. We wore earplugs and our ears are still ringing. The overhead compartment is full of safety gear. The seats are cramped. The back of the plane smells like jet fuel prior to takeoff. The entire plane is poorly built and should be grounded.

I think this is a great seat. For one, there is no one to share with you, and to your left a whole lot of space. There is a limited recline, but I am one of those passangers who do not recline, even in business and first class. There isn't a lot of leg room in front of you, but there is enough for me and I'm a big guy. The best part is the space to your left. Plenty of room for stuff, for me, I kept my bag there so I didn't have to use the stowaway.

The Comfort Plus seat 12B was very stiff and had hard spots. After the three hour flight, I experienced back pain which has not resolved after 16 hours. Despite my getting up and moving around every 30 to 45 minutes, the seat kept exerting more pressure at its hard points. Also, the seat did not recline at all. Delta needs to investigate the use of better foam like that used for orthopedic cushions. And they need to do a better job of maintaining the seats.

Similar to 10C, this seat should be yellow/green as anyone sitting here will get bumped by passengers as they board. And by bumped, I mean body checked and smacked by any laptop case, messenger bag, or purse that passenger may be carrying over their right shoulder as they navigate the bend in the aisle and realign themselves for the long walk down the main cabin aisle.

The combination of no recline, no extra legroom and the tray table location make it unique on the aircraft and should be classified bad seat. If you want two together you can opt for the A, B seats. I flew these seats and they were very uncomfortable. Delta BTW sells them as premium seats.

The Boeing 717 is a old aircraft design (DC8) re-made by McDonnell Douglas before they went bankrupt. It was a great plane in 1960. Old by any standard today. The only good seats are in front of the wing or the exits. However prepare to freeze in flight and boil on the ground. The A/C packs are pathetic when working, if you get a flight where they have to defer one then you are stuck at low altitude bumping along with very low airflow. DELTA bring on the C-Series!

Delta has very little leg room on this flight. I am 74" tall and sitting upright my knees had 1/2" of room. The seats are tricky on this 717-200, as if you try to recline the seat slides forward jamming your knees into the seat back in front of you. Then is it is impossible to straighten your legs as the pivot point of the knee is 3" above the seat bottom. Horrrible.

The window seats in rows 28 and 29 have no view because the engines are directly outside the windows. The engine intakes are exactly even with the back edge of the windows in row 27 so the view is limited. Engine noise in all these rows is significant. I think these rows should at least be yellow because of this. Other that that is plane is comfortable and modern inside, with nice seats and easily accessible power ports.

I just flew LAX-SFO in Comfort+ and it was very impressive. The seat pitch is 4" more than BA's European business class and the seats are way better with power points. In the fact the whole interior had a 'new' feel to it even though these aircraft went out of production in 2006. As has been observed the aircraft is noisy inside but for short hops this is a luxury travel (the upgrade was £19) at economy rates.

This seat does not recline though there is no exit row behind it. (None of the seats in row 21 recline.) This seat is uncomfortable, like there is less cushion in the seat. But maybe this applies to the entire plane as I have only been in 21A for both legs of the trip. This seat has no floor storage unless you can snag the space under 19A (two rows ahead). I know the description of 20B is incorrect as there is floor space available for this seat. In fact, 20B has the area under 19A & 19B to use for storage.

AMAZING. When flying this plane, do yourself a favor and upgrade to the Comfort+ seats. It was roomy, spacious, comfortable, and had all the amenities - the electrical outlet and USB port - so your electronics not only stay charged throughout your flight but are charged up by the time you land. Awesome experience. I will look for this plane again when I'm flying.

The whole aircraft is the new "skinnier" seat design which has less padding (and more seats); the padding is very rigid and uncomfortable. If you have no legroom it's worse. 20C & D look appealing because they are two together (no third seat) and they are emergency exit row; however there is LESS leg space than standard seats. You're losing by choosing these seats.

I must say, for a $19 upgrade to a 'Delta Comfort+' seat, this seat was pretty awesome. I'm a pretty big guy, 5'10 @ 350lbs. Next to me was a 300lbs lady in the middle seat and what appeared to be a 300lbs man in the aisle seat. THERE WAS TONS OF LEG ROOM. The reason being, is that Row 10 is right behind the First Class seats. The only drawback is that the Tray Table is in the Arm Rest, so the seat width is a bit more narrow than the rest of the seats I believe. However, wasn't that bad of a seat at all. In fact, I chose the exact same seat again for my return flight just earlier this evening. Great seat!

BOS-JFK had a 3 hour delay on the ground in BOS which is about the limit for this plane, after that it starts to feel small, Not sure if it was from the hot weather but the a/c couldn't keep up and it was very warm on the plane. seat itself is fine and comfortable

Flew 717 for first time from SFO to LAX. While the aisle is centered in first class it is not in coach due to a 3-2 layout. The flight attendants can't navigate the turn going to or returning the serving carts which are stored in the first compartment galley. consequently, seat 3B was bumped numerous times by flight attendants and their carts.

This seat is probably the worst seat in Economy comfort. The aisle takes a turn and as the seat that juts out, everyone who passes by the seat will bump into you even if you're not in the aisle. The passenger has sit leaning towards the window and even then, people with large bodies, bags, and stuff will still brush on to you. Even the beverage cart dings into the seat whenever it passes by. If I fly this aircraft again, I will definitely not pick this seat again.

Very frequent Delta flyer, but ended up in 29A as the last person to get standby on the flight. I agree that this seat should be a last resort. The seat in row 28 has recline, and you do not. Even with the smallest Mac (11 inch) I could barely use the track pad. This is not the worst seat, the isle seats in row 29 are the worst with the limited space and restroom traffic.

One of my favorite planes in the Delta fleet or any fleet. Why? Every seat has A/C power and headrests. Cushions are decent- certainly fine for a 3-hour or less flight. That said, there are some seats I would avoid- 10C...board early and its just awful. Row 1, I hate bulkheads without footwells and pretty sure this plane lacks them. First and Economy Comfort could use another 1" of seat pitch, but yeah, those days are over. Other than that...great plane.

From Atlanta, GA to Allentown, PA: 10A is such a comfortable seat, lots of legroom and recline, the extra $29 dollars were totally worth it. I was also given free alcohol. However, for the way back (KABE-KATL/Seat 22E) I felt so cramped! I barely had enough legroom, it was uncomfortable but bearable. My recommendations: If you happen to fly on this plane, purchase the economy comfort seats or your trip will be type uncomfortable. PD: rather fly on this plane than on the CRJ.

Should be RED rated as Bad Seat. The leg room is very restricted due to the bulk head. Also, there is a blower fan motor just above the seat. It is so loud that I could not hear the flight attendant trying to talk to me. I would avoid this seat. For a long flight it would be awful.

The aisle on this plane jags between 1st and economy, so this seat has great leg room. You are essentially sitting in the aisle. That said, the flight attendants have difficulty maneuvering carts around this turn and you might get bumped. Additionally, the curtain separating 1st and economy doesn't come across in front of you, it hits you at the side of your leg. As people go back and forth through the curtain, prepare to have it whipped into you. I would not recommend this plane for a trip where you need to rest. On the plus side, because there is no actual bulkhead, seats 10 A,B and C can store items under the 1st class seats in front of them. For C the space is very small, but ample for the other 2. Nice not to have to store your purse for take off and landing.

The seats are more comfortable than those on other aircraft of the same size. Armrests are spacious, and you don't have to decide if you or the passenger seated next to you get to use them. Even though the divider between 1st and coach is a curtain, this is a very quiet and spacious aircraft.

Seat 20B did not have extra leg room. Its only advantage is having nobody sit next to you. It does not recline either, at least I didn't find the knob to do so. It's narrower and padding is harder. I give this a "Be aware" at best.

10C has one distinct disadvantage with the 2+3 Economy setup on this type - the aisle "jogs" to the left and narrows from First to Economy, so many people tend to bump into you during the boarding process. Looking forward while seated in 10C, only the right half of your seat has a seat in front of it, the rest of it faces directly into the aisle. Additionally, if the two passengers to your right place bags under the seat in front of them, there is only a very small outboard section of the first class seat for your bag. Otherwise it is one of the best seats in Economy as it allows you to exit the plane immediately after First Class.
